Unlike Gerard from IKL, I'm afraid I'm just not a Alan Titchmarsh fan. But, why, you ask? Well, it's pretty much for the same reason that the fairly innocuous James Blunt manages to get up some people’s noses…
Actually, my pseudo-aversion comes from the fact that he seems to be the David Attenborough replacement and, as for his geology-based programmes...well, don't get me started. The fabulous Aubrey Manning would have been a far better choice (a hark back to my cheery Edinburgh days) or the masterly and merry Richard Fortey (but, then, I am biased). Luckily, BBC seems to have realised the error of their ways and are starting to recruit the wonderful Iain Stewart instead.
John watched his 'Nature of Britain' on Wednesday while I battled with a sock heel - and Alan did actually make me ears prick up. He tells us, such were the concentration of spiderlings hatching one year, that 'it rained wool round about the stronghold of Compsa (note 147: Pliny the Elder, Natural History: A Selection.' 77AD)'. Raining wool! Excellent! (This is the earliest known written reference to spider silk, by the way...)
As ole Alan has the irritating ability to pop up on every radio, TV, website and newspaper (often concurrently) and shows no sign of abating, I guess I will have to learn to love him. I promise I shall try.
